Using the Situationist International concepts of the spectacle and commodity fetishism, The Specular Highlights Institute is a three part interactive installation. Alternative fact “info signs” mimic museum fact cards and can be found throughout the exhibition area. Selfie spot signs parody the picture spot signage found in amusement parks and encourage viewers to pose in front of nontraditional locations using hashtags. Absurdist safety card pamphlets lampoon airplane safety cards as they supply life advice. Three different absurdist safety cards are hidden throughout Art in Odd Places locations each day for viewers to collect and take home.
