One definition of noise is “random fluctuations that obscure or do not contain meaningful data or other information.” Inasmuch as the bulk of its structure will contain an absence of meaningful data, the “Monument to Lost Data” will be a physical representation of such “noise in the data.” As our society digitizes its archival media, an unintended consequence is that we lose a great amount of data, diminished our ability to retrieve the past. The “Monument to Lost Data” is a physical representation of that data loss, an “archive of absence,” the nullity of information, a commemoration of data voids.
