The Board Game Russia – The Land of Opportunity is a medium to explore the possible fate of millions of immigrants from former Soviet republics in Central Asia who come each year to Russia to work. The project enables players to experience all the risks and possibilities of life as a foreign laborer, to understand the relationship between a game of chance and personal responsibility, and to begin to answer such questions as “Why do immigrants work illegally?” and “Why do they subject themselves to such conditions?” At the same time, through descriptions of the labyrinthine rules of the immigration process and the bureaucratic obstacles, deceptions and traps encountered, players gain a basic understanding of how to maneuver within this system and what aspects of the system need to be changed.
