Promenade of Visual Flâneurs/Flâneuses

FAQs

Deadline October 15

What is a Flâneur/ Flâneuse?

A Flâneur/ Flâneuse is a Stroller, Saunterer, Wanderer, Boulevardier who strolled in Paris in the 19th Century detached from society with no other purpose than to be an acute observer of society.  AiOP 2019: INVISIBLE  Promenade of Visual Flâneurs/ Flâneuses will be our spectacle for the public to observe.

Why a Promenade?

It’s time to take to the street in style! AiOP 2019 INVISIBLE curator LuLu LoLo’s artistic practice is rooted in public spectacle.  Growing up in Italian East Harlem, LuLu witnessed the elaborate church processions that inspired her art. In her early work she created elaborate thematic sculptural headpieces that she wore as if she were in a church procession.  LuLu has a passion for promenades, processions, and parades—each have their own rhythm and theme.  In 2011, LuLu organized the Centennial Procession for the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire: The Procession of 146 Shirtwaists and Named Sashes for the 146 mostly young immigrant women who died in the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire on March 25, 1911.
