Thinkers in Residence: Christine Licata, Day 1

Thinkers in Residence spend time on 14th Street over the festival weekend reflecting on 14th Street, patterns of movement, artists, pedestrians, publics, personal reflections, and participation. Their responses take the form of writing, walking, image-making, poetry, or on-the-spot conversations with the public.

Presenting the observations of Christine Licata.

POST 1
#saliva
#Water: 99.5%
#Electrolytes: 2–21 mmol/L sodium (lower than blood plasma); 10–36 mmol/L potassium; 1.2–2.8 mmol/L calcium; 0.08–0.5 mmol/L magnesium; 5–40 mmol/L chloride; 25 mmol/L bicarbonate; 1.4–39 mmol/L phosphate
#Iodine (mmol/L concentration is usually higher than plasma, but dependent variable according to dietary iodine intake)
#Mucus (mucus in saliva mainly consists of mucopolysaccharides and glycoproteins)
#Antibacterial compounds (thiocyanate, hydrogen peroxide, and secretory immunoglobulin A)
#Epidermal growth factor (EGF)
#Various #enzymes; there are three major enzymes found in saliva:
α-amylase (EC3.2.1.1), or ptyalin, secreted by the acinar cells of the parotid and submandibular glands, starts the digestion of starch before the food is even swallowed; it has a pH optimum of 7.4
#Lingual lipase, which is secreted by the acinar cells of the sublingual gland; has a pH optimum around 4.0 so it is not activated until entering the acidic environment of the stomach
#Kallikrein, an enzyme that proteolytically cleaves high-molecular-weight kininogen to produce bradykinin, which is a vasodilator; it is secreted by the acinar cells of all three major salivary glands
#Antimicrobial enzymes that kill bacteria
#Lysozyme
#Salivary lactoperoxidase
#Lactoferrin
#Immunoglobulin A Proline-rich proteins (function in enamel formation, Ca2+-binding, microbe killing and lubrication)
#Minor enzymes include salivary acid phosphatases A+B, N-acetylmuramoyl-L-alanine amidase, NAD(P)H dehydrogenase (quinone), superoxide dismutase, glutathione transferase, class 3 aldehyde dehydrogenase, glucose-6-phosphate isomerase, and tissue kallikrein (function unknown)[6]
#Cells: possibly as many as 8 million human and 500 million bacterial cells per mL. The presence of bacterial products (small organic acids, amines, and thiols) causes saliva to sometimes exhibit foul odor
#Opiorphin, a pain-killing substance found in human saliva
#Haptocorrin, a protein which binds to Vitamin B12 to protect it against degradation in the stomach, before it binds to intrinsic factor

POST 2
#Bacteria:
Dominating bacterial species revealed by #culturemethod and #MALDI-TOF identification on #phones according to the percentage of #Enterococcus faecalis in total bacterial #16S rRNA
#Coagulase-negative staphylococci = 0.432%
#Micrococcus luteus = 10.038%
#Acinetobacter lwoffii = 0.411%
#Kocuria spp. = 0.825%
#Bacillus spp. = 0.183%
#Corynebacterium spp. = 0.183%
#Paenibacillus lactis = 0.869%
#Bacillus cereus = 0.869%
#Staphylococcus aureus = 0.362%
#Pseudomonas luteola = 0.362%
#Neisseria flavescens = 0.362%
#Rothia dentocariosa = 0.255%
Species identification was performed through culturing methods and MALDI TOF; comparison is based on percentage (>1%/<1%) of E. faecalis DNA in total 16S rRNA

POST 3
#PM2.5 particles
PM2 are floating particulate matter in the air measuring 2.5 #micrometers in #diameter or less. PM2.5 is so small it can be #absorbed into the #bloodstream upon inhalation. For this reason, it is typically the #pollutant posing the greatest health threat.

Where does it come from?
Sources can be emitted from either manmade or natural sources, or created by other pollutants.

#Combustion resulting from power plants
#Smoke and soot from wildfires and waste burning
#Vehicular emissions and combustion from motors
#Industrial processes involving chemical reactions between gases (sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and volatile organic compounds)

Two #Spectral #Lodgers
Ghosts in a #FourteenthStreet Boarding House
Two #alleged #ghosts have been engaged in the #unholy #business of making day and night alike hideous for sometime in the house at 131 West 14th Street. The building is situated just west of the #Twenty-second #RegimentArmory, which it adjoins, and is of brick, four stories and a basement. During the past year the house has been occupied by Mrs. Mary Carr, a #widow #lady, as a #boarding house, and at times it has been completely filled, as many as 30 persons lodging beneath its roof. The ghosts however had played #sad #havoc with Mrs. Carr’s #business-of-late, and her boarders have been gradually leaving her as the #fact #dawned on their minds that the #house was #haunted.

POST 5
#destiny
You have a single transverse palmar crease also known as a simian line. It is a combination of the head and heart lines and is the frequent assumption of #chierologists, #dermatoglyphics experts, and #palmists that this type of line performs the functions associated with both lines.
It signifies that the bearer’s emotions and mental powers are blended together. You find it difficult to separate #emotions and what is desired (the heart line) from intellect and what is thought (the head line). It is believed the joined line gives the ability to focus on one thing, absolutely, to the exclusion of all else. You also supposedly experience far more misfortune than most, usually due to the same intensity that drives you.
